China is sinking fast, rising sea level threat

NASA has also made an assessment which shows that the sea level has increased by more than 9 cm in just 30 years. Since 1993, there has been a total rise of 9.1 cm in the sea. Two years ago it had increased by 0.27 cm.

World Meteorological Organization report

Some time ago, in the report of the World Meteorological Organization, it was also warned that if the sea level in the world continues to rise like this, then the big cities of the world will drown. Cities at risk include Mumbai, Shanghai, Dhaka, Bangkok, Jakarta, Maputo, Lagos, Cairo, London, Copenhagen, New York, Los Angeles, Buenos Aires and Santiago.

scientist’s warning

Scientists have been warning for a long time that the water level of the sea is increasing on the earth. Due to rise in water level, small islands and many countries can face disaster. At present, news is coming that China is also sinking fast. Last year i.e. in 2022, China’s coastal sea level reached a record level. Since it was first measured in 1980, the water level has risen by an average of 3.5 millimeters every year.

Chinese government estimates

Wang Hua, head of the Marine Forecasting and Monitoring Section at China’s Ministry of Natural Resources, says sea level last year was 94 mm higher than the 1993-2011 average and is rising faster than the global rate. He told a press conference that in the past 11 years, from 2012 to 2022, China’s coastal sea levels were the highest since they were first recorded. Wang did not give any comparative figures, but last year’s average sea level rise of 94 mm was 10 mm more than in 2021. He also said that due to global warming, the temperature of China’s coastal waters has increased rapidly and that is why the sea level has increased.

what does the annual report say

In an annual report published in May last year, China attributed the above-average rise in sea level to the melting of glaciers and polar ice caps, along with rising water temperatures. In this report, it was warned that the increase in sea level can have long-term effects. These include disturbance of coastal ecosystems, loss of tidal flats and increased risk of flooding and salt tides in coastal cities.
Let us tell you that about 45% of China’s population of about 140 crores and more than half of the country’s economic production comes from the coastal areas only. Many important cities including Shanghai are situated on the coast of China, Shanghai is the most developed and richest city in the country.
