Air strikes and explosions were reported, read here

According to accounts on social media and by Interfax Ukraine, explosions rocked Ukraine’s capital Kiev early Friday. The whole country reportedly heard air raid sirens and explosions.

There is nothing specific about what was killed in Kiev, nor were there any reports of injuries or damage. The city’s military authority reported that anti-aircraft units were in use.

According to earlier reports, the explosions affected cities from the center of Ukraine to the southern Mykolaiv region.

According to Interfax, explosions were reported just after midnight in Mykolaiv in the south, as well as in the central Ukrainian cities of Dnepro, Kremenchuk and Poltava.

According to Interfax, the unidentified aerial objects were allegedly headed west of the country, according to reports from the Telegram messaging program.

The attacks came a day after the Kremlin on Wednesday held a phone discussion between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, saying it would welcome anything that could advance the conclusion of the conflict.

The presidents spoke for the first time since Russia invaded Ukraine in February last year.

The Kremlin insisted that its “special military operation” in Ukraine still had goals that needed to be met. On February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared the invasion of Ukraine vital to Russia’s security.

The invasion, according to Ukraine and its Western backers, was an unprovoked territory grab by Putin that sparked the biggest land battle in Europe since World War Two.

Throughout the fighting, Russian troops faced roadblocks and for 10 months have been attempting to enter the charred remains of Bakhmut, a former city of 70,000 people.

Bakhmut is seen by Russia as an important gateway to other cities in eastern Ukraine, currently its main military target.
